T'sek"...I'm not so sure I'm ready for this."
His stomach turned as the dragon blinked from between, banking over the Weyr with dizzying speed. Tasek squeezed his eyes shut, willing his stomach to hold down his breakfast, gripping the straps so tightly that his knuckles turned white with tension. You said yes, he berated himself as he felt the dragon drop in altitude. You could have just as easily said no -- oh shards I feel sick -- and now I have to bond one of the little ones -- The dragon circled, bringing the ground closer and closer to itself. Tasek dared not open his eyes. He'd been on a dragon before, years and years ago, and he still couldn't forget the experience. His mother and father had tried and failed to get him to leave their quarters for days afterward. He still couldn't understand how people did the job of a dragonrider and didn't feel immense anxiety at the absence of the sweet, sweet ground beneath their feet. Another dip in altitude. Tasek clenched his fists harder against the straps, which he hadn't thought was possible. He wondered if the dragon could sense the feeling of bile rising in his throat with every drop and bank. Although the beast probably couldn't avoid such flying maneouvers, Tasek thought for a moment that perhaps it found a sort of game in making him want to die. And finally, the feeling of a thump as the dragon touched down, folding its wings gracefully to its sides. No more motion. Tasek opened one eye a slit, then the other, and then as both eyes opened he released the pressure in his hands. He suddenly realized a sharp pain in his palms. He'd clenched his fists so tightly that his nails had dug into his palms and made tiny rivulets of blood appear. The rider helped him down from the dragon and smiled happily, as if completely oblivious to how pale the boy had become. "Welcome to Sedona Weyr," he began. "You'll find your quarters over..." The world began to spin around Tasek, and the voice of the rider faded. The ground rushed up to meet him. The shout of the rider as he rushed to catch the new candidate sounded distant. What have I gotten myself into? Starfall Dragonry is owned by Molly (a.k.a. Starburst). |
